KOTA BHARU: The previous judiciary was not independent as there were leaders who acted according to their whims without complying with the Rule of Law or constitution, a veteran politician said.

Gua Musang Member of Parliament Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah (Ku Li) said instead, the Rule of Law should be applied at all times and not be abused by those in power at a particular time.

Without wanting to go deeper into the differences between the current and past administrations, Tengku Razaleigh said upholding the law and constitution remained a crucial endeavour.

"If we are upholding the Constitution, it means that we want to see the 'the Rule of Law' run well.

"The law applies to all. If it is an 'A', it is an 'A', if it is 'B', then it is 'B'. This, regardless of which political party (in power at that particular time)," he said.

Tengku Razaleigh said this in a press conference after attending the 24th general meeting of the West Malaysia Malay Teachers' Association (KGMMB) Cooperative Bhd held here last night.

Present was KGMMB Cooperative Bhd chairman Ibrahim Marlan.

Recently, former deputy prime minister Tun Musa Hitam said that he had never seen a judiciary that was as independent as it is now, especially on political matters.

He said the country's judiciary was ultimately scrupulous, causing anger in many parties, especially those with political interests.
