SEREMBAN: Pakatan Harapan is expecting a high voter turnout for the 15th General Election (GE15) although the number of people who cast their votes during the Melaka and Johor state elections was low, says Parti Amanah Negara president Mohamad Sabu.

He said the turnout could be as high as in 2018, when 82.3% of registered voters came to the ballot boxes.

This is due to the passing of the anti-party hopping law in Parliament which will prevent MPs from changing parties.

“The signals we are getting is that the people are happy with this recent development and we expect the voter turnout for GE15 will be high,” he told reporters after opening the Amanah national convention here.

Mohamad, who is Pakatan deputy chairman, claimed that the coalition has a good chance of winning GE15 if voter turnout is higher than 80%.

He said many who voted for Pakatan in 2018 didn’t vote in the two state elections because they were disappointed with the reasons that caused the fall of the Pakatan Federal Government in 2020.

“But now, we are confident the voters will exercise their Constitutional right in the national polls,” he said.

Amanah communications director Khalid Abdul Samad, who was also present at the media conference, said PAS had always used religion to win support from the people.

“The only capital they have is to brand everyone as kafir (infidel), unIslamic or people with no morals,” he said, adding that PAS hardly practised what they preached.
