BUKIT GANTANG: PAS believes that Umno's move to go solo in the 15th General Election (GE15) may backfire, reminding it of the Malay party's fall from power in the 2018 polls.

Pas vice-president Datuk Idris Ahmad said the party would continue to work towards contesting in GE15 under a unified front with Umno and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) under the Perikatan Nasional (PN) collaboration.

"We will continue to work towards realising this. We believe that it will be the people who will ultimately judge our efforts (at uniting the Malay-Muslim parties)," he said.

On Umno's continued rebuffs of Pas' attempts to work together in GE15, Idris said the former would do well to learn from the lessons of the 14th General Election (GE14).

"It is Umno's prerogative (to go it solo). If they want a repeat of GE14, then by all means continue. But we will press ahead with our unity concept," he said after participating in the "Berjalan Teguh Bersama Datuk Idris Ahmad" programme at Dataran Tarbiah Bukit Gantang, here, yesterday.

Former Umno vice-president Tun Musa Hitam recently said that the three dominant Malay-Muslim parties, namely Umno, Pas and Bersatu, need to unite as a single political party to champion the rights of the Malays and Muslims.

Musa was quoted as saying that even if the three came together under a "big tent" concept, it would still not be enough to influence the voters.

Meanwhile, Idris, in responding to a question, said Pas did not agree with the perception that Malay support, particularly the youth, was leaning towards the opposition.

He said this was demonstrated in the state elections in Melaka and Johor, where Pakatan Harapan (PH) lost a large number of Malay-majority seats.

"We do not see the support of the Malays, especially the youth, moving towards PKR, Parti Amanah Negara or DAP.

"The outcome of the state elections in Melaka and Johor demonstrated that Malay support wasn't on their side, to the extent that they lost seats in Malay-majority areas."
