PUTRAJAYA: Matters involving the 15th General Election will be raised during this week’s Cabinet meeting, says Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

The Prime Minister said he would raise the issue, alongside matters that had been raised by certain parties, such as the economy. 

“I will bring the matter up at the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday before I leave for the United Nations General Assembly.

“The discussion with Cabinet on the election may be earlier than the one scheduled to be held with Umno’s top five,” he said after launching the National Energy Policy 2022-2040 on Monday (Sept 19). 

Ismail Sabri, however, reiterated that the date of the general election would still be determined by Umno’s top five.

He said discussions with Umno top five on the same issue was expected to take place before the party’s supreme council meeting, which had been scheduled for Sept 30.   

Umno top five refers to party president, deputy president and three vice-presidents, of which Ismail Sabri is one of them.

On calls by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin for national polls to be held if the country’s economy is not properly managed, the Prime Minister pointed out that Muhyiddin, too, advises the government on economy in his capacity as the National Recovery Council chairman.

“In terms of economy, we have (Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department) Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed managing it as well as the Council which is chaired by Muhyiddin.

“The council also advises the government so this is a collective responsibility. If it (economy) fails then everyone fails, including the MPN,” he said.

Muhyiddin was reported to have said that it was better for the Prime Minister to call for the general election if the country is not managed properly.

Muhyiddin, who is also Perikatan Nasional chairman, said that Ismail Sabri could not be oblivious to the slide of the ringgit - which affected the import of food.
