KUALA LUMPUR: The National Professors Council (NPC) has given a "stern warning" to former attorney-general Tan Sri Tommy Thomas for allegedly making a racist statement about the government.
NPC president Professor Datuk Dr Raduan Che Rose, in a statement today, said associating the government as one that was dominated by a single race was "very inaccurate".
He said this was because it was supported by parties of all races such as MCA and MIC, including multiracial parties from Sabah and Sarawak.
"NPC is giving a stern warning to Thomas to not fish in troubled waters and destroy the racial unity among the people in this beloved country by making provocative and racist statements.
"His statement that the government is dominated by the Malays and showed very poor performance is very racist.
"The NPC believes that such a statement is irresponsible and could damage the unity that has been built through the years," he said.
Raduan added that the public was aware that Malaysia, along with other countries in the world, was battling challenges brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, its effects on the economy and the survival of the people.
He said the country began to witness growth in gross domestic product (GDP) in the second quarter of this year, at 8.9 per cent, the highest in Southeast Asia.
This, he added, was a clear indication of the government's performance in restoring the economy post-Covid-19.
He also said the policies introduced by the government had helped to rebuild the confidence of both local and foreign investors, ensuring that economic recovery was on the right track.
"Apart from that, Malaysia has been listed as the world's third most competitive Global Business Services location behind India and China.
"This biannual data by global consultants Kearney has proved the world's trust in global business services. There are many other signs that show a positive recovery process and a return to the true potential of a country that is determined to develop the nation and defend the fate of the people."
Raduan said the public, who had just celebrated the 59th anniversary of Malaysia's formation, felt very offended by such a racist political statement, adding that unity was a valuable asset of the community in going about their daily life and for the wellbeing of present and future generations.
"This racist attitude shown by Thomas or anyone else must be protested by all who love the peace, security and humanity that we have cultivated over the years.
"Indeed, the peace and unity that exists among the people in this country is like breathing in fresh air unconsciously, and that should not be any party that pollutes it, which will certainly bring harm to all," he added.
In a forum titled "Dark Forces Towards GE15" on Saturday, Thomas had suggested for the opposition bloc to focus on three "critical areas" to repeat the outcome of the 14th general election.
He had said the opposition must get voters to ask themselves whether having a "Malay government" had made the country better and more efficient.
Thomas had also reportedly claimed that the reason Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had resigned as the seventh prime minister was due to the impression that his government was not "Malay enough".
"The Malay electorate will say they (the Malay government) have failed, so the opposition must make that an issue," he was quoted as saying.
