GEORGE TOWN: Penang has urged for transparency on any investigation carried out by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) into civil servants.

“No one is above the law. Civil servants and agencies found to be involved in accepting bribes, abuse of power and making false claims must be investigated and charged as soon as possible,” said Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

“However, we urge transparency from MACC as we do not want the image of the state’s civil servants and the state government to be tarnished by account of the number of complaints received since 2019,” he said in a statement yesterday.Chow said the state was ready to work with MACC to ensure officers involved in corrupt practices be dealt with severely.

His statement was in response to MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki’s interview on Penang RTM’s Mutiara FM radio programme Cakna Rasuah on Thursday in which he said that offences such as accepting bribes, abuse of power and making false claims among civil servants in Penang was worrying.

Citing statistics, he said MACC had received 919 complaints about such transgressions from 2019 until now.
