PUTRAJAYA: Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming has big plans to make local authorities economically vibrant, financially resilient, as well as less reliant on the federal and state governments.

Nga, a first-time cabinet minister, said he would also look into setting up more fire and rescue stations, increase fire-fighting equipment as well as uplift the welfare of firemen.

These measures, he said, was part of his seven key priorities during his stint in the ministry.

"I also want to develop and empower local governments to have better integrity so that they can deliver a quick and efficient service to the people. 

"I also want to draw up a more comprehensive housing plan, which will take into account home ownership, housing constructions, and the target groups, among others," he told reporters during a press conference at the ministry today.

Besides that, Nga said he will also focus on community empowerment and strengthen the agenda of developing smart and safe cities.

Nga said he would review the Malaysia Smart City Framework 2019-2025 which emphasised on seven key elements, including smart government, smart economy, smart living, smart mobility, smart environment, smart people dan smart digital infrastructure.

"We may need a new and suitable indicator to ensure that this agenda can be implemented more effectively," he said.

Nga said the ministry would also look into managing solid waste in a more efficient, effective and economical way through the "waste to energy" method.

Asked on whether he plans to revive local government elections, Nga said the agenda was not his immediate priority.

Nga also left it to the prime minister's discretion on whether he should be assigned with a deputy minister for the Local Government Ministry.

"During the cabinet meeting tomorrow, we will also finalise on the job scope of each ministry," he added.
