BUTTERWORTH: The state Department of Environment (DOE) conducted checks on a container suspected of bringing in electrical and electronic waste from the United States at the North Butterworth Container Terminal (NBCT) here today.
The checks were carried out together with officers from the Collaborated Border Management Unit of the Customs Department, Sirim QAS International Bhd Penang and NBCT.
State DOE director Sharifah Zakiah Syed Sahab said the importer was suspected of making a false declaration (in the manifest) of "aluminium alloy".
She said checks found that the 40-foot container was loaded with scrap waste from printed circuit boards, internal hard disk drives, central processing units and other electronic components categorised as scheduled waste under code SW 110 (e-waste) First Schedule of the Environmental Quality (Scheduled Waste) Regulations 2005.
"A notice of instruction under Sections 31 and 37 of the Environmental Quality Act 1974 was issued to the importer to return the container to the country of origin.
"The failure to do so could result in court actions under Section 34B involving a maximum fine of RM500,000 and mandatory imprisonment of a maximum of five years.
She said the illegal importation of e-waste was against the law and the international convention (Basel Convention).
"Illegal processing without control devices can cause the release of hazardous chemicals, including heavy metals, that pollute the soil, water and air.
"E-waste produced in Malaysia must be processed in premises licensed by the DOE."
