JOHOR BARU: The federal government has approved RM19 million to enhance the state's flood forecasting and warning system, the state assembly was told today.

Johor Tourism, Environment, Heritage and Culture Committee chairman K. Raven Kumar said the state and the federal governments had taken measures to brace for weather changes that could result in floods.

He said the project would be completed in early 2024 and entailed the upgrade of 140 hydrological stations in 100 locations.

He also said the Johor Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) was preparing an environmentally friendly drainage master plan for the Tebrau/Plentong area in Johor Baru and Pengerang in Kota Tinggi.

Raven, who is Tenggaroh assemblyman, said the master plan would be the main reference point for local authorities.

"For agricultural areas in the districts of Pontian, Batu Pahat and Muar, the state government has prepared a final report on flood mitigation proposals."

He said the Johor DID also provided rainfall and river table data to relevant agencies in anticipation of floods.

He said the department was always on standby to give warnings to district-level disaster management committees in the event of heavy rains and high tide that could heighten the risk of flooding.
