MELAKA: The Melaka Government wants schools to work towards promoting a harmonious environment and unity by organising Muhhibah programmes, says Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali.

The Melaka Chief Minister said he would not tolerate any discrimination, diversion, or segregation based on the ethnicity of the students in the state under his helm.

"After 60 years of independence, our unity should be strong and hopefully we won't witness unsavoury issues about race and religion in our schools.

"Our schools must focus on academic excellence, moral uprightness and social conscience without any discrimination," he said after attending a Ponggal event at a Tamil school in Jasin here on Saturday (Jan 28).

The event was also attended by Melaka Youth Development, Sports and Non-Governmental Organisations Committee chairman VP Shanmugam.

Sulaiman said he wished to see more programmes relating to unity being organised by schools in the state.

He said schools should ensure quality and equity in education for all students.

"All students should have equal access to education," he said.

Sulaiman said fostering unity through school programmes impacts the thinking capacity of a student helping the individual in accordance with changing technology as well as social landscapes and to stay ahead of the curve for the country to reach greater heights.

"Racially diversified programmes will also help chart the path of righteousness and uphold ethics and morals at all times," he said.

Sulaiman also highlighted the importance of preserving the nation's rich culture and patriotism.
