A WEEK after breaking news of her miscarriage, former Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah Anwar has been appointed as Senior Economic and Financial Advisor to the Prime Minister of Malaysia, her father Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

In her message on the miscarriage, Nurul Izzah did mention that she was making the round from Permatang Pauh to Putrajaya, but not many people questioned the cryptic message.

However, in an exclusive interview with The Star, she confirmed that she started her service on Jan 3 and hopes to bring her experience from serving as an MP for two decades to the role.

“One of my goals is to channel and utilise Malaysia’s best and brightest talents, inside and outside the government, to add value to the ongoing efforts to improve the economic condition of the people,” she said in the interview.

Nurul Izzah believes that the government leadership needs to listen to the voice of the people, which she describes as being in line with the Prime Minister’s instructions.

She also said that in her role, she gets input from people, especially those in the B40, and M40 groups.

“The instructions from the PM are clear: talk to the people and listen to their ideas, concerns and expectations. They are the most important stakeholders of all.”

Her appointment sparked some comments on social media networks, with a Facebook user

Jeff Ooi (the pioneering blogger who was a Democratic Action Party MP from 2008-2018) exposing her appointment as an economic adviser to the PM on his Facebook page and publishing an extract of Nurul Izzah’s lengthy interview in the Sunday Star.

The question is: why did Anwar not announce the news himself? The PM has promised there will be no cronyism under his rule; is the appointment of Nurul Izzah a form of cronyism or nepotism?

However, on Jeff Ooi’s Twitter account, his followers are saying the rule Nurul Izzah has taken is “pro bono” and that this will not make her rich.

Nurul Izzah lost in the recent 15th General Election to her challenger, Penang Pas Youth Leader Muhammad Fawwaz Mohamad Jan. - Jan 29, 2023
