KUALA LUMPUR: Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Armand Azha Abu Hanifah has set his sights on the Umno Youth chief post in the upcoming party election.

The Subang Umno division chief took to his Facebook account to announce his intention to contest for the post.

Armand Azha is entering the party polls with the hashtag 'Hebatkan Pemuda' campaign, which reflects his bid to make the Umno Youth wing more progressive and dynamic.

"If I am given the mandate to lead Umno Youth wing, I will ensure the movement will be on the front to defend the party from attacks not only from the ground but also in the social media.

"Hebatkan Pemuda is my aspiration to make the Umno Youth wing more dynamic and progressive without neglecting the foundation of the party.

"Let's return Umno to its moderate path to restore confidence among the people towards the party," he wrote.

In the same social media posting, Armand Azha also outlined 10 initiatives, which he plans to implement if he wins the race for the Umno Youth chief position.

Among them included periodic evaluation in every three months to assess the strength of the Umno Youth Wing, to set up the Pemuda Malaysia cooperative in all divisions work towards the wing's and party's preparation for the 16th General Election (GE16).

Other Umno youth leaders speculated eyeing for the post included Umno Youth assistant secretary Datuk Hasmuni Hassan and Jasin assemblyman Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh.

At the 2022 Umno General Assembly last month, incumbent party youth chief Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki announced that he would not be defending his post in the party polls.

The Umno supreme council set Feb 1 for wing and branch elections. Candidate registration for central and division posts will open on Feb 13 and close at 5pm on Feb 26.
