BERSATU president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin will be writing an official letter to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to seek the release of the party’s accounts.

“MACC should immediately cancel the freeze if it does not find any proof of misappropriation of funds or abuse of power in Bersatu’s accounts,” Free Malaysia Today reported the Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman as saying.

The Bersatu leader further stated that this is crucial so that the administration of Bersatu can go on smoothly and that its staff can be paid on time.

It is understood that the MACC has only frozen the central accounts of Bersatu while those of the party’s respective state chapters are not affected.

“We have checked … the state Bersatu accounts are still active,” Berita Harian reported Bersatu supreme council member Datuk Razali Idris as saying.

MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki stated yesterday (Feb 1) that Bersatu’s accounts had been frozen in accordance with the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorist Financing, and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act (AMLA).

Although the head honcho of the graft buster confirmed that the accounts were frozen a fortnight ago, he denied that the current investigation is linked to the COVID-19 stimulus package funds.

Muhyiddin who helms Bersatu has been linked to the roll-out of several economic stimulus packages worth some RM600 bil to assist Malaysians during the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, MACC which opened investigation papers into the alleged misappropriation of the stimulus packages funds in December last year narrowed its probe to focus on RM92.5 bil after finding that only this amount entailed government funds.

The Pagoh MP had refuted allegations that his administration misused RM92.5 bil during his tenure as prime minister, while Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin has accused Putrajaya of using the anti-graft agency as a political tool. - Feb 2, 2023
