KUCHING: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) are currently in the process of installing WiFi network equipment in Kampung Semawa, Pantu in Sri Aman district, about 138km from here.

In a statement on Thursday (Feb 2), MCMC said this was an interim measure following complaints of a non-functioning telecommunication tower in the area, while waiting for the WiFi services under the Sarawak Rural Broadband Network (MySRBN) initiative to be completed by the end of March.

"Based on the information received, the telecommunication tower referred to by the complainant is part of a project under construction managed by the state government," the statement said.

The construction of the tower, located 4.5km from Pantu town, had been completed and it was now in the final stage of commercial negotiations with service providers such as CelcomDigi, Maxis and UMobile for the provision of 4G mobile service before the end of this year.

"MCMC has facilitated the negotiation process between the service providers and SDEC, which is responsible for implementing the telecommunication towers development project funded by the state government," it added.

Meanwhile, the MCMC said that under the first phase of the National Digital Network (Jendela), a total of 10 new telecommunication towers were being constructed in Sri Aman and would start operating in stages until the fourth quarter of this year. - Bernama
