KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 3 — Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Johari Abdul has announced a relaxation of the dress code for MPs for a year as part of ongoing procedural reforms, The Star reported today.

MPs will no longer be required to wear ties during sittings in the lower House of Parliament from February 13.

“I will announce on February 13, the first day of the session, no necktie for the whole year,” he was quoted as saying.

But Johari said there would be no changes in the batik dress code for Thursdays.

Neckties were first made optional in the Dewan Rakyat last December, during a special two-day sitting after the contentious 15th general election that finally led to the appointment of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as prime minister.

Many MPs, including Anwar, ditched the tie on the December 20 sitting, as did members of the press covering Parliament that day.

Not all MPs, including those from PKR, were in favour of the optional necktie policy.

Among them is Subang MP Wong Chen who told The Star he is used to wearing one and would likely continue to do so as the necktie “gives a bit of formality and personality, even as he noted that the world had moved closer to dressing down since the Covid-19 pandemic.
