JOHOR BARU: Former Johor mentri besar Datuk Seri Hasni Mohammad has confirmed he will be vying a Umno vice-president post in the party elections.

The Umno supreme council member added he would be putting his name in as a candidate for one of the vice president posts.

"I am offering myself as a candidate as it is the only position that can be contested at the present moment. I believe many will be contesting the posts, including incumbents such as Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin," said Hasni.

"In the spirit of wanting to contribute to Umno, I am also contesting," he added.

Hasni said this when met after attending a special Johor Umno meeting chaired by state chairman Mohamed Khaled at its office here on Saturday (Feb 4).

When asked to comment on the crowded challenge for the posts, the Simpang Renggam MP and Benut assemblyman added that it was good for the party.

"Even though there are some quarters making negative remarks about Umno lately, I see that many leaders coming forward to offer themselves as candidates is a positive sign," said Hasni.

"This shows that the leaders that we have now are not leaving Umno as they have the confidence that the party can still play a major contribution in the nation's future," he added.
