PUTRAJAYA: Transport Minister Anthony Loke dismissed claims that Malaysia has a dearth of local technical experts specialising in public transportation.
He said it was inaccurate to say that there was a lack of experts in the country, and this had caused the frequent breakdowns of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) service.
He said such an opinion was unfounded because the country, which gained independence 66 years ago, has its pool of talents in various fields.
He was responding to an opinion from an expert who said the country's lack of local technical experts caused frequent breakdowns of the LRT services and that this was why it took so long to repair.
"It is inaccurate to say that Malaysia has no technical experts...we have many experts, engineers and so on.
"So I hope there are no sweeping statements made about this because it is unfair to other parties.
"In fact, the recent breakdown involving the Bandaraya LRT was not caused by a technical issue, but due to a structural crack in the flyover," Loke told reporters after attending the ministry's Tautan Mesra dan Perpaduan event here, today.
Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Engineering faculty head of the Road Safety Research Centre Associate Prof Dr Law Teik Hua had said the country should have an existing pool of technical experts to immediately solve public transport issues, because such breakdowns involved huge losses.
Law said Malaysia currently only imported technology from foreign countries, but there is not much expertise to tackle the problem even though the LRT has been used here for more than 20 years.
Former Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong had previously said that experts from abroad such as Istanbul, Turkey and Toronto, Canada were flown in to find the main cause of the failure of the Kelana Jaya LRT Automatic Train Control System (ATC), which caused a weeklong disruption to the service in Nov 9 last year.
