PKR president Anwar Ibrahim says the party will discuss any entry of former Umno leaders before a decision is made on whether to open the door to them.

"Several former Umno leaders have expressed interest in joining (PKR)," the prime minister said at a press conference today.

"We will discuss this with the Umno leadership in due course."

Anwar's remarks echoed those of PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli, who recently said that any move to allow former Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin into the party would be discussed first.

Khairy, the former health minister, had said in several interviews that he was keeping his options open after being sacked from Umno on grounds of breaching party discipline.

He also said that he would focus his efforts in Selangor after being sent to contest the Sungai Buloh seat in order to allow Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan to run in Rembau.

Former Umno Supreme Council member Zahidi Zainul Abidin, who was also subjected to disciplinary action, had meanwhile said that he wanted to join PKR before joining Amanah instead.

Khairy and Zahidi were among a string of Umno leaders who were sacked or suspended in what was seen as a move by their president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to purge the party of those critical of the top leadership.

Former Selangor Umno chief Noh Omar was sacked alongside Khairy, while Sembrong MP Hishammuddin Hussein was suspended for six months.
