KUANTAN: Pekan became the second district to be hit by floods in Pahang following continuous downpour since yesterday, sending more than 1,500 people to relief centres.

As of 7pm, there were 1,585 people from 446 families at six relief centres in Kuantan and 89 people at three relief centres in Pekan.

Kuantan police chief, Assistant Commissioner Wan Mohd Zahari Wan Busu, said the flood-hit areas in the district were Kampung Sri Damai, Taman Makmur Mahkota Jaya Batu 12, the Sungai Pandan public low-cost housing scheme, Jaya Gading, Chendering and Medan Warisan.

"It is raining heavily in most areas in Kuantan. Some roads were inundated in the morning but currently there are no road closures," he said in a statement.

Sungai Lembing assemblyman, Mohamad Ayub Mat Ashri, said the floods, which left certain stretches in the former tin mining town flooded at 8am today, have completely receded and no one was evacuated.

Meanwhile, the Welfare Department's flood portal stated that three relief centres were opened in Pekan, namely at SK Seri Terentang, SK Tanah Putih and SMK Peramu Jaya.
