IPOH: Bersatu will try to look into legal channels to unfreeze its bank accounts, says its deputy president Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu.

He said the party would look for suitable ways should its request to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to unfreeze the bank accounts be unsuccessful.

“We will have discussions with the party leadership on the appropriate action to be taken,” he said during a ceremony for those who had helped with Perikatan Nasional’s 15th General Election campaign in Manjoi here yesterday.

Ahmad Faizal was asked to comment on Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s statement that it would send a letter to the MACC to unfreeze its bank accounts.

Bersatu’s accounts were frozen by the MACC in an investigation into the RM300mil the party is said to have received. So far, the graft-busting agency has recorded statements from at least 15 people.

Ahmad Faizal said he was unsure whether the letter mentioned by Muhyiddin had been sent.

“I am not sure if the party has written the letter yet. It’s a long weekend until Monday (today),” he said.Ahmad Faizal, who is also Perak Perikatan chairman, said Bersatu had sought to be transparent when it published its finances, but was disappointed that it was perceived negatively.

“We received huge donations from the public, businessmen and corporations, as shown in our accounts. I am confident that many will support our efforts and continue to donate to us,” he said, adding that Bersatu would cooperate with the MACC in its investigations.

Ahmad Faizal said he hoped that the party’s accounts could be unfrozen as it needs to pay its workers.

Separately, Ahmad Faizal aimed a jibe at Nurul Izzah Anwar and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim over her appointment as the Prime Minister’s senior economic and financial adviser.

He said Nurul Izzah, Anwar’s daughter, must be at an advanced level (“tahap gaban”) to be appointed.
