PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob says Umno is in a dire need of change after suffering a disastrous defeat and severe decline of support from young voters in the 15th General Election.
The former prime minister said party leadership should focus on strategies to attract young and new voters in then next national polls, or risk to be continuously rejected by the people.
"Umno needs to rejuvenate its image. One that is not disconnected from the youth. Otherwise, those who have already rejected us will continue to do so in the next polls," he said as quoted of saying by by Utusan Malaysia.
Ismail Sabri said 4.5 million new voters had cast the ballot in the GE15 and an increase of similar number would do the same in GE16, following as per the law which allowed 18-year-olds to vote in general elections.
Umno only won 26 parliamentary seats out of 222 in GE15.
At the same time, Ismail Sabri said the recent sacking of dissidents such as former youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin and former Selangor Umno chief Tan Sri Noh Omar had sent a wrong message to the masses.
Also bearing the brunt were former vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein and former information chief Shahril Hamdan - both were suspended for six years.
"We are giving the wrong message, that there is no democracy in Umno. That is how the people look at us."
