KUALA LUMPUR: The coming 2023 Umno General Assembly looks set to herald a new wave of changes, with the majority of the leadership comprising new faces for the 2023/ 2026 term.

Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said this was because the recent party elections saw more than 60 per cent of the elected leaders made up of new people.

"This general assembly has its own significance as it will showcase new faces among the leadership at all levels, namely the Supreme Council, Wanita, Youth as well as Puteri.

"We hope that the delegates can make full use of this to strengthen their unity and commitment to the party's struggles.

"I foresee that with the spirit and unity of members at all levels, this will lead to greater determination and commitment to continue Umno's agenda to uphold religion, race and country," he was quoted as saying in Umno Online after officiating the party's flag-raising ceremony at the Plaza Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre on Saturday.

The Umno elections in February saw two new faces being given the opportunity to helm the vice-president posts, namely Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail as well as Titiwangsa member of parliament, Datuk Johari Abdul Ghani, with Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin completing the trio.

The Youth and Puteri wings also saw new faces in the form of Mohamad Akmal Salleh, who is now Youth chief, as well as Datuk Nurul Amal Mohd Fauzi, who is Puteri chief.

Asyraf said the general assembly, which runs from June 7 to 10, had to be held earlier due to the preparations for the state elections in six states.

"The assembly is a chance for us not just to meet but also to map out our strategies to face the six state elections which are just around the corner," he said.
