KUALA LUMPUR: The Higher Education Ministry (MoHE) will introduce a hybrid and flexible learning system at universities.

Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said through the hybrid and flexible learning system, varsity students would attend university lectures only in their first and final year.

"In between, the students will be given the choice and flexibility to study from home, without having to be physically present in class, where they can attend lectures online.

"Through this initiative, students will be able to organise their activities more flexibly," he said in his speech during the closing ceremony of the 'Jom Masuk U 2023' programme and the launch of the TVET Foundation Programme at Universiti Malaya today.

Khaled said the move had several advantages such as reducing the education loans and costs and allowing students to work or do things that required them not to be on campus.

He said a total of 95 first-degree programmes from 19 public universities were ready to offer a flexible learning system for the 2023/2024 academic session.

In his speech, Khaled also announced that the duration of study for some programmes would be shortened from four to three years.

"The ministry has been constantly updating programmes and courses offered by higher education institutions nationwide.

"We want the programmes and courses to be arranged in the best way and to benefit all parties."

He said on that basis, a total of 44 programmes in nine higher education institutions had been identified to shorten the duration of the study.

Khaled added, other than reducing the amount of loans or study costs, it would also open up opportunities for graduates to enter the job market a year earlier.
