SUBANG JAYA : National carmaker Proton saw a 35 per cent jump in sales in May thanks to what it said is a total industry volume (TIV) rebound, after a slow start to the second quarter in April.

13,268 units (domestic + export) were sold last month, equivalent to sales growth of 40.9 per cent over April.

Sales for the first five months of the year stand at 62,970 units, a year-on-year increase of 38.9 per cent, the highest for any brand in the Malaysian automotive sales table, Proton said.

It estimates that TIV rebounded by 32.2 per cent in May, closing at 61,600 units and as a result, giving Proton a market share of 21.5 per cent for the month and 20.9 per cent for the year.
