KUALA LUMPUR: DAP's apology to Umno can bring both parties closer in the unity government, said Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

He said it was not wrong for Umno Youth to ask for an apology from DAP on the latter's past "insulting" statements towards Umno.

"I am not forcing DAP to apologise, but there's nothing wrong (with asking them to do so).

"It would be good. DAP can apologise to Sarawak and its people, so if they can (apologise to Umno), it will bring us closer as partners in the unity government.

"It will also once and for all erase any suspicions and doubts about one another," he told reporters when met at the media centre at the Umno General Assembly today.

Mohamad however said he did not want this issue to cause a crack in the unity government.

The party's youth movement, on Thursday, had demanded that DAP apologise for its allegations against Umno in the past.

Its chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Salleh said the party should apologise if it wanted to "soften" the hearts of Umno members, especially in facing the upcoming state elections.

Following this, party president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi called on party leaders and members to stop bringing up the party's past rivalry with DAP.

In agreeing with Zahid's mandate to move on, DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke said there had been no incompatibility between parties in the unity government since its formation, and that the cabinet had been functioning well. - Reporting by
