"Second network needed even with DNB achieving 80pc 5G rollout"

KUALA LUMPUR: A second network (entity B) is still needed even when Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB) has executed its 80 per cent of populated areas coverage target, to provide redundancy and counter any issues of a monopoly by DNB.

In a FAQ shared along with the DNB press release in conjunction with the share subscription agreements (SSAs) signing event between five mobile network operators (MNO) and DNB held earlier today, it added that a second network would also provide choice to access seekers.

Earlier today, five MNOs entered into SSAs with DNB to collectively pump in RM1.165 billion, for a 14 per cent interest each in DNB.

According to the FAQ, the delay was due the substantive and complex nature of the transaction involving multiple parties, extensive efforts and time were required to complete the negotiations and finalise the terms of the agreement.

The FAQ reiterated that the MNOs involved in the SSA signed today would come to a mutual agreement as to which entity they will be in.

If a decision cannot be reached between the MNOs, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission will step in.

The FAQ assured that all regulatory obligations, including spectrum allocation, licensing, etc will be applied on a non-discriminatory basis, to ensure that both networks will be on a level playing field when the time comes.
