WHO can blame them from celebrating as their most cherished Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (PMX) has today officially surpassed the 17 months in office of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin who helmed the so-called Perikatan Nasional (PN) administration during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Whether the Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman has broken the jinx with the length of his current tenure or otherwise, he has at least lasted longer than his two backdoor predecessors namely Muhyiddin who is also the Bersatu president and Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob who currently holds the record as the Malaysian PM with the shortest stint of 14 months.

Alhamdulillah! Today is already 17 months of PMX @anwaribrahim leading the unity government,” declared pro-Pakatan Harapan (PH) influencer Amer Hamzah (@amer7211) on the X (previously Twitter) platform.

“The government breezed through a motion of confidence in the Parliament immediately after being appointed (on Dec 19, 2022) with a unanimous majority (147 in favour). This is something that backdoor PMs @MuhyiddinYassin and @IsmailSabri60 dared not subject themselves to do.”

Congratulating PMX for having officially surpassed the record of PM8 (Muhyiddin) and that of PM9 (Ismail Sabri) much earlier on, netizen ehsonofzakaria (@ehsan_zakaria) envisages:

“Next is PM7’s (Datuk Seri Najib Razak) 21-month and that of Pak Lah’s (Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi). But if you want to challenge Najib’s record, many of his followers may be hurt by your action.”

Many supposedly pro-PH supporters also hailed Anwar’s “longevity in office” despite the PKR president getting teased as “PM tepi” (literally, PM on the sidelines) prior to his eventual appointment as Malaysia’s 10th PM on Nov 24, 2022. More so, he has so many detractors who have little faith in his leadership.

Many netizens are also relieved that Anwar’s stint did not last only for a short spell, hence there is high hope that the unity government can last at least until the 16th General Election (GE16) slated not later than February 2028.

Whether PMX’s administration can last another 43 months till GE16, the next hurdle is that of the second stint of twice former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as PM7 - one that lasted 22 months during the short-lived PH government which collapsed in February 2020. - April 24, 2024
