PUTRAJAYA: The act of MCA sitting out from the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election would not disrupt the unity government's campaigning for the polls, said Fahmi Fadzil.

The unity government's spokesperson said the relationship between Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional was the core, and said BN had expressed its intentions to assist in the campaigns.

"On the ground, we are focused. We have a good candidate.

"Last night in Kuala Kubu Baharu, (Umno Supreme Council member) Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan gave his approval (to our candidate).

"She has experience working in several ministries, she is young, dedicated, and a family-oriented person with a lot of experience which can help develop Kuala Kubu Baharu.

"This will be our focus and our machinery is united," he told reporters at the Housing and Local Government Ministry and Communications Ministry joint Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration here, today (April 25).

Last night, DAP's Pang Sock Tao was announced as the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election candidate for the unity government.

DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook said the decision to field Pang, who is also the press secretary to Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming, was finalised after considering all qualifications possessed by Pang.

Last week, MCA had said it would not campaign in the upcoming Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election if the unity coalition did not field a candidate from BN.

Previously, MIC, which is also a BN component party, also said it would sit out the campaign.

However, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Sunday said MIC would extend its support to the unity government candidate, and denied reports that MIC would boycott the by-election in Selangor.

The Election Commission fixed May 11 for the by-election. Nomination is set for April 27, with early voting on May 7.

In the Selangor state election last year, Lee helped DAP to retain the seat after she polled a majority of 4,119 votes in a four-cornered fight.
