PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has asserted that Malaysia will not tolerate any external claims on Sabah, with reference to the claims made by the Philippines, which according to him have been firmly addressed.

He stated that the sovereignty of Sabah is a crucial issue highlighted by Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

“There are rumours of external threats to Sabah’s sovereignty. Thanks to the Chief Minister for making a firm statement that we will defend every inch of Sabah’s land as part of independent Malaysia,” he said during his keynote address at the People’s Grand Gathering at the Sabah International Convention Center (SICC) today.

“I recently responded when the Philippine government raised the issue of Sabah’s status again. However, I stated that my relationship with the Philippine government is very good.

“My personal relationship with President Bongbong Marcos is very good and close; he considers me a good friend.

“So we must negotiate amicably, but on the matter of national sovereignty and Sabah’s status as part of Malaysia, we do not compromise at all.”

In July, the Philippines submitted a submission to the United Nations over claims to seabed territory and this sparked vigorous protests from Malaysia.

Meanwhile, Putrajaya submitted a diplomatic note to the United Nations on Saturday (Aug 3) to reject the Philippines’s bid. - Aug 4, 2024
