MIC has decided to appoint coordinators in about 125 parliamentary constituencies having sizeable Indian voters next month.

Speaking at the opening the 78th Penang MIC convention late Friday (Aug 9), party president Tan Sri S. A. Vigneswaran also called on leaders at division and branch levels to work hard to woo the Indian electorate in anticipation of the Barisan Nasional (BN) component party contesting in the next national polls

In a related development, MIC had also discussed the party’s membership BN during Wednesday’s (Aug 7) central working committee (CWC) meeting but did not give any indication of the decision made.

“First we were made orphans and now we can call ourselves as refugees,” Vickneswaran said in an apparent reference to MIC and MCA questioning the remarks made by BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi regarding cooperation with Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the 16th General Election (GE16).

The secretaries-general of MCA and MIC maintained that BN component parties were not consulted over the UMNO president’s statement that BN would work with PH.

Another point being disputed is Zahid’s announcement that BN would not throw in its hat in areas where its PH partners are contesting.

“MIC is a honourable party. It has never begged or requested for help from the other parties. The RM25 mil allocated by the PH government is for the community. We can stand on our feet without depending on others,” asserted Vigneswaran.

In his speech, Vickneswaran lamented that despite the party working hard in many of the constituencies, criticisms were hurled at MIC by opposition parties with a small number of Indian members.

“These people have no right to question us. They would not have contributed a single sen for the community or the university. They hardly did anything for the Indian community,” he contended.

Vickneswaran further claimed that other political parties are not bothered about community-related issues as they do not represent a single community “but MIC as a community-based party can’t ignore the rights of the Indian community”.

He also took at a dig at Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim by noting that “the real MGR is already dead yet there is nobody who can replace him”. - Aug 10, 2024
