UMNO Supreme Council member Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi has urged the party to protest the recent decision by the Home Ministry to lift the ban on a controversial comic book authored by former DAP member Hew Kuan Yau.

In a Facebook post, Puad expressed concern that the public was disappointed by the ministry’s move, noting that Putrajaya should take steps to ensure the ban remains in place.

He stated that it is essential for UMNO to object strongly, claiming that the comic book, titled Belt and Road Initiative for Win-Winism, portrays the late Communist Party of Malaya (CPM) leader Chin Peng in a positive light.

“This is a subtle way to spread communism, and it threatens our stability,” Puad said.

The Home Ministry had initially banned the comic book in October 2019, citing concerns that it promotes communism and socialism and spreads misleading information about these ideologies.

The book was alleged to have presented China and its Belt and Road initiative in a favorable manner while casting the Western world in a negative light.

However, on Aug 12, a federal government gazette revealed that the ban had been lifted, following a revocation signed by Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail on Aug 6. The decision applies to the comic’s publication in Malay, English, and Mandarin.

Hew, also known as “Superman Hew,” successfully appealed against the ban on July 6, 2022. Although the federal government attempted to reinstate the ban, the Federal Court denied its application for leave on Dec 8, 2022.

In response to the ministry’s decision, UMNO Youth has called on the government to seek a review of the Federal Court’s ruling.

UMNO Youth head Dr Muhammad Akmal Saleh noted that the sensitivities of the Malay-Muslim majority in Malaysia must be prioritised to maintain the country’s stability. – Aug 14, 2024
