IN 2024, the Malaysian ringgit has emerged as the best-performing currency in Southeast Asia, surpassing the Singapore dollar, which ranks second.

However, this achievement has sparked an online debate with some netizens claiming that opposition supporters are unhappy with the ringgit’s strong performance.

Ringgit has been performing strongly against the US dollar, reaching a 28-month high at 4.35 MYR/USD on Aug 29, 2024.

This appreciation is attributed to the US Federal Reserve’s anticipated interest rate cuts. The ringgit has gained 0.46% against the US dollar, making it one of the best-performing currencies in Asia.

This has led some Pakatan Harapan supporters on X to suggest that PAS supporters wouldn’t grasp the meaning of the headline, implying they might not understand English, a language they reportedly dislike.

Additionally, an X user said the translation would mean only one thing: Salah DAP, which is a common phrase the opposition supporters use, that is blaming everything on the DAP.

For a ‘thinker’ it is great news that the ringgit is doing well, as for them, it shows that the economy is on the right track.

Another user shared a statement, allegedly from Perikatan Nasional (PN), claiming the ringgit’s strength is due to a weaker dollar. While the joke targets the opposition, the statement attributed to PN is likely fake. - Aug 31, 2024
