KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is rapidly building a supportive ecosystem for the development and adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), according to Datuk Seri Yeoh Seok Hong, Managing Director of YTL Power International.

"Our first AI data centres are being built, and our universities are focusing on building AI talent," he said.

Yeoh highlighted the collaboration between YTL AI Labs and Universiti Malaya (UM) in creating the Massive Multi-task Language Understanding (MalayMMLU) as a key milestone.

This development is expected to accelerate Malaysia's progress toward becoming an AI-driven nation, he said.

The MalayMMLU, a comprehensive benchmark for evaluating large language models (LLMs) in Bahasa Melayu, was recently accepted at the Empirical Methods in Natural Language Processing 2024 (EMNLP 2024) conference.

Designed to assess LLMs across a range of language tasks, the MMLU benchmark ensures fair and thorough evaluations, fostering excellence in LLM development. It includes over 24,000 questions spanning the entire K-12 curriculum across 22 subjects from Malaysia's education system.

Yeoh said this benchmark is pivotal in enhancing LLMs' understanding of Bahasa Melayu, promoting advancements in education, healthcare, and public services, and enabling the development of culturally relevant AI solutions for Malaysia and Southeast Asia.

He also announced that YTL AI Labs and UM will publicly release the MalayMMLU dataset along with evaluation code, encouraging the wider AI community to contribute to the growth of more inclusive and effective AI technologies.

"YTL AI Labs is proud to be part of this journey," he said.
