KOTA KINABALU: The government has formed an action council that will deal with climate change issues in Sabah, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

The Sabah Climate Action Council (SCAC) will be tasked with setting the state's direction on the issue and coordinating mitigation projects and weather change adaptations.

Hajiji said to accommodate this, the state has moved to amend the Sabah Land Ordinance (Cap 68), by inserting a clause on the legal framework, with regard to carbon capture effective June 19 last year.

"Sabah had also just recently completed an inventory on Greenhouse Gas (GHG) and vulnerability evaluation on the development of a Climate Change Policy for Sabah, aimed at formulating a low carbon emission stand for the state," he said.

Hajiji said this during an engagement session between the Economic Ministry and the Sabah government on the Implementation Initiatives on Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) at Menara Kinabalu here.

Hajiji was represented by his deputy and state Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan.

Also present were Sabah Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Arifin Arif, State Secretary Datuk Seri Safar Untong, Economic Ministry Chief Secretary Datuk Nor Azmie Diron, State Attorney-General Datuk Brenndon Keith Soh and State Federal Secretary Datuk Rosli Isa.

Hajiji said the CCUS initiatives were similar to the aspirations of the state government in tackling climate change matters and realising the national green policy along with Sabah's commitment to making the "Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC)" a reality.
