KUALA LUMPUR: Johor DAP chairman Liew Chin Tong may contest the state-level party elections next month, says a source in the know.

This comes amid reports that the member of parliament is expected to step down as the state DAP chief.

Under DAP's election system, members do not nominate themselves for party elections and are instead nominated by at least two party branches.

A source told the New Straits Times that Liew, who is DAP deputy secretary-general, has been nominated for the election on Oct 6.

"However, whether he will remain as the state chairman after the election is something to be decided by the leaders selected by the party members."

In DAP's two-tier election process, party delegates initially choose 15 state committee members.

These newly elected members then select the office holders from within their group, including the state chairman.

When contacted, Liew said his focus now was on the Mahkota by-election.

"We will deal with the Johor DAP election after the Mahkota by-election".

Liew has been the party state chairman since he first won it in 2015.
