TRANSPORT Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook must provide a detailed explanation over the lack of transparency surrounding the recent decision to backtrack on the compulsory installation of the MyDigital ID application to log into the MyJPJ app, said MCA.
Its vice president Datuk Lawrence Low said the public deserves answers about who had initially pushed for this policy and who was the one who had instructed the Road Transport Department (JPJ) to enforce the policy.
“Why was it enforced when Loke stated that no decision had been made? Which department or individual wields higher authority than the Transport Minister?” Low asked in a statement on Thursday (Oct 3).
“Such vagueness in operations erode public trust in the government. Many users faced significant difficulties registering for MyDigital ID, including a lengthy process, operation inconveniences and technical failures.”
Recall that following an announcement on the MyJPJ app that the MyDigital ID would be required for logins starting Oct 10, the MyDigital ID platform witnessed a surge in registrations, with 150,000 new users signing up within 24 hours.
Following the announcement, Malaysians have taken to social media to vent their frustration and share issues faced when registering for MyDigital ID, including ‘Error’ messages, the app being slow to respond to requests, and failure to register despite trying multiple times.
On Wednesday (Oct 2) Loke announced that the requirement was deferred and that users can continue accessing the MyJPJ app without MyDigital ID.
Elaborating, Low said the public has the right to know how the Transport Ministry intend to resolve these issues and which department or minister will be responsible for overseeing the integration of MyDigital ID with MyJPJ.
“It is common sense that the government cannot roll out untested technical measures without considering user experience,” he stressed.
“Despite the deferment following strong backlash, public anger and unease persist. The government pressured people to complete the MyDigital ID registration quickly, only to defer the mandatory requirement less than a day later.
“Such contradictory decisions confuse the public and lead to further questioning of the government’s capabilities and preparedness on policy implementation. From announcing the mandatory enforcement of MyDigital ID to its overnight deferment – what will happen next?”
Low said the authorities should not assume that the public will accept such inconsistencies quietly.
“Until MyDigital ID has undergone sufficient stress testing and troubleshooting, the MyJPJ application should offer alternative login methods instead of mandating all users to use MyDigital ID,” he noted.
“JPJ must provide flexible solutions to ensure user convenience and safety rather than imposing outdated technology.” – Oct 3, 2024
