HOME Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the police investigation into Global Ikhwan Sdn Bhd Holdings (GISBH) is being conducted based on solid evidence.
He said the investigation – comprehensive and covering multiple legal angles – aims to ensure justice is served and those guilty are held accountable.
Initially, four laws were applied in the case, but this has since expanded to 10 different legal provisions.
“We now use nine to 10 acts, initially just four, but as we opened the investigation papers, we found violations involving other acts,” Saifuddin explained.
He further clarified that the police investigation differs from the responsibilities of the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) under JAKIM
“The police investigation must be distinguished from the responsibilities of the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) under JAKIM, as well as the state religious authorities.
“They focus on aspects of religious deviance, while the Home Ministry (KDN) oversees many acts that we enforce,” he said when questioned by the media.
Last month, PAS urged the authorities not to act excessively in their crackdown on the GISBH.
“PAS welcomes a transparent, detailed, and professional investigation into various allegations against GISBH according to appropriate laws, whether it involves aspects of religious beliefs and practices, or other issues such as business practices, sexual misconduct, abuse, criminal acts, and so on,” says PAS Secretary-General Takiyuddin Hassan.
PAS has also urged authorities to exercise caution in their actions against GISBH, citing concerns over the negative campaign and narrative circulating on social media.
Yesterday, FOCUS reported that former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, has voiced concerns over the government’s ‘heavy-handed’ actions against GISBH, stating that the treatment appears aimed at eliminating the organisation rather than addressing specific wrongdoings.
Speaking in an exclusive interview, Dr Mahathir compared the current situation to his administration’s handling of the Al-Arqam group in 1994.
“We were aware Al-Arqam were deviants. Our actions were to correct their understanding, not to jail them outright. We explained Islam to them, and they accepted our explanations.”
Dr Mahathir suggested that while there may be legitimate issues, such as possible criminal activities, the government should focus on addressing those specific offences.
“Take action against what they do wrong, but do not take action against what they are not doing wrong,” the nonagenarian added. – Sept 6, 2024
