VIENTIANE: Malaysia today reiterated its commitment to continue the momentum and existing policies of Thailand established under the previous administration.

This includes initiatives related to connectivity and enhancing ties among the people.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said this during a bilateral meeting with his counterpart, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, on the sidelines of the 44th and 45th Asean Summits and Related Summits held here.

This meeting marked the first occasion the two leaders convened since Paetongtarn's appointment as Prime Minister on Aug 16.

Anwar also extended his condolences to Thailand for the recent floods affecting the northern, northeastern, and central regions of the country, which have impacted over 66,000 families.

Paetongtarn succeeded Srettha Thavisin, who was removed from office on Aug 14 for violating ethical regulations by appointing a lawyer currently serving a prison sentence to his cabinet.

In a separate bilateral meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Malaysia expressed its request for mutual visa exemption with Canada.

Furthermore, Anwar highlighted Malaysia's intention to expedite the finalisation of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Defence Cooperation.

He also welcomed the establishment of the BlackBerry CyberSecurity Center of Excellence (CCoE), which aims to strengthen cooperation in cybersecurity.
