THE Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has announced that U Mobile will implement the country’s second 5G network, potentially collaborating with other mobile network operators pending approval.

The MCMC will oversee the project’s implementation to ensure compliance with the Communications and Multimedia Act, having conducted a thorough technical and commercial evaluation to select the mobile network operator for the task.

In July, CelcomDigi Bhd expressed confidence in its proposal, stating, “We believe we have submitted a compelling case to deploy the network–either independently or in partnership with others–to foster a thriving 5G ecosystem.”

However, U Mobile’s selection over other significant telecommunications companies has drawn criticism from the Madani government.

An investigation by an account on X revealed that U Mobile is linked to significant shareholders, including Tan Sri Vincent Tan. This has intensified scrutiny over the decision.

Another user on X said the selection was a bad decision.

A user on X also asked how U Mobile beat the bigger firms in the bidding. U Mobile won the bid against Maxis Bhd and CelcomDigi Bhd. The tender closed at the end of July.

One user defended the decision, saying U Mobile offered better services and was one of the few to offer 5G at the start of its rollout in Malaysia. – Nov 2, 2024
