KUCHING: Sarawak General Hospital will be the first hospital in the country to have rooms where female nurses can take breaks.

It would start with three rooms, said Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.

She said this after receiving a sponsorship of RM76,300 from insurance broking firm Perinsuran Brokar to set up the three rooms in the male and female medical wards and in the labour ward.

She said other wards would have similar rooms when sponsorship became available.

Nancy said she felt compelled to set up the "lounge" given that hospital staff were often busy with many patients.

Bilik Kasih Wanita will feature facilities that provide comfort and privacy, particularly for nurses who are pregnant, nursing mothers who need to pump breast milk, and those who are stressed out juggling work.

"The use of a comfortable rest area can help manage their fatigue, allowing them to deliver the best service and avoid errors due to exhaustion."

She said she hoped that these rooms would encourage the hospital's female staff to "prioritise their health and maintain their mental wellbeing."
