KOTA KINABALU: The current state government must remain the driving force for Sabah’s development and future, says Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

He said although Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan leaders held an unofficial meeting recently, it should be viewed positively and added that the state government is composed of Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and Pakatan Plus.

He added that this does not mean GRS cannot work with other parties.

“We can, for the people of Sabah. So we look at the meeting positively,” Hajiji said after officiating at the Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (PGRS) convention at the Sabah International Convention Centre on Sunday (Nov 10).

The Gagasan president stressed that the GRS-Pakatan Plus coalition is the state government and is responsible for deciding the future of Sabah.

“We do not want others to determine our future here. As the government today, we must have the best formula for our state,” he said.

On 6 November, Sabah Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan began discussions during an informal meeting on a potential electoral collaboration in the coming state polls.

Earlier in his speech, Hajiji emphasised the need to combat slander and lies increasingly directed against GRS and party leaders.

He said all party political bureaus must enhance their strategies and act promptly to protect the party from false accusations, which may come from opposition parties and political adversaries.

“I ask all division leaders to strengthen your political bureau to fight against all forms of lies,” he said.

As state elections are approaching, Hajiji reminded party members and GRS component members to not only strengthen the party but also fortify their grassroots support base.

He said the state election can be held anytime before October next year, and there is no time to waste.

He advised leaders to be humble and actively engage with the local community to build a strong rapport with their support base.

“Remember, the fate of this government is in the hands of the people. Reflect on your divisions, and assess your relations with the grassroots,” Hajiji said.

He warned leaders who prioritise party members over the grassroots, stating the importance of those who support the party.

He requested honest reviews and reports from the ground, not fabricated ones to embellish the situation.

Hajiji urged all members and leaders to stay united and maintain a solid front as they enter the election season.

“Political stability is key for economic growth and the prosperity of the people, while arguments and conflicts lead to failures and destruction,” he said.

“We can’t afford to break apart now,” he stated.
