JUST recently, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim apologised to the Cabinet after expressing frustration over delays in the MyDigital ID and dual 5G network projects.

He vented his anger during the National Digital Economy and Fourth Industrial Revolution Council meeting.

Anwar had previously voiced dissatisfaction at the Finance Ministry’s assembly, emphasising the need for progress.

However, it appears that netizens weren’t entirely too pleased upon hearing that they may have to renew a digital ID annually.

A news report last week said Malaysians must renew their MyDigital ID annually, as the digital certificate expires one year after registration.

It also has a 90-day renewal window after expiry while deleting the MyDigital ID app invalidates the certificate. Users are then required to proceed with the cancellation at a kiosk.

Introduced in November 2023, MyDigital ID aims to simplify online access by eliminating the need for multiple passwords, especially for government services.

An X user states that it will be a challenging task for the government to encourage most of the people to register for MyDigital ID for the first time.

The user adds that she’s not convinced if the app will work properly or not and whether they will have technical delays before launching.

Furthermore, netizens are upset at the fact that if the app is deleted from their devices, they may have to re-register for the digital ID again.

There is confusion about whether the ID will be deleted or only the ‘certificate’.

The user adds that changing phones every year could burden users as they’d have to re-configure multiple apps for work and banking. This will be an extra task.

The user adds that Malaysia’s configuration for government apps is not as efficient as Singapore’s.
