GEORGE TOWN: The highly anticipated Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) project in Penang is gaining momentum, with its groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for Jan 11, 2025.
The ceremony will be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Sungai Pinang state assemblywoman Lim Siew Khim, in a Facebook post on Monday (Dec 31), stated that in preparation for the event, MRT personnel are actively carrying out site preparation works, including area clearing, tent setup, and the provision of temporary infrastructure such as fencing and access roads.
"The site preparation works will be carried out by contractors daily from 8am to 7pm until Jan 10, 2025," she said.
She explained that the tight schedule is necessary due to the recent Christmas and upcoming New Year 2025 celebrations.
Frequent use of heavy machinery, including lorries transporting stones, debris, and tent equipment, is expected along Lebuh Sungai Pinang and Lebuh Sungai Pinang 1, she noted.
Lim added that this activity may cause disruptions to the local community and businesses in the Bandar Sri Pinang area.
She also mentioned that a total of 13 parking spaces (Lots 27–39) on Lebuh Sungai Pinang 1, next to Lot 574, will be reserved for contractor use to facilitate smooth site preparation.
"MRT has apologised for any inconvenience caused during this preparation period, including dust and noise disturbances, and has committed to implementing mitigation measures to minimise disruptions to the community," she said.
