Tan Sri Datuk (Dr.) Rafiah started her career as a lecturer at the Faculty of Law, University of Malaya in 1974. In 1988, she ended her service with the University of Malaya as the Dean of the Faculty. She then moved on to become the Head of the Legal Department of the Malayan Banking Berhad ("Maybank"). In 1991, she was promoted to the post of General Manager of the Human Resource Department at Maybank. She was then invited to serve in Bank Negara Malaysia as the Assistant Governor for the Security Department, Legal Department and Property and Service Department from 1995 to 1997.
Tan Sri Datuk (Dr.) Rafiah's international experience includes holding the position of Assistant Secretary General for Human Resource Management, United Nations, New York, from 1997 to 2002 and was the first Malaysian to be appointed to such a high ranking post in the United Nations system. From 2003 to 2006, she was the Executive Director of the International Centre for Leadership in Finance, now known as The ICLIF Leadership And Governance Centre. In 2006, she was appointed as the Vice-Chancellor/President of the University of Malaya. She was the Executive Director of NAM Institute for the Empowerment of Women from 2009 to 2013.
Tan Sri Datuk (Dr.) Rafiah was appointed as the Independent Non-Executive Directors of Allianz Malaysia Berhad ("Company") since November 2012 and subsequently appointed as the Chairman of the Company in May 2018.
