Malaysia leads mobile wallet usage in Southeast Asia
KUALA LUMPUR (June 23): Malaysia leads other countries in Southeast Asia in the usage of mobile/digital wallets at 40%, ahead of the Philippines (36%), Thailand (27%) and Singapore (26%), according to a Mastercard Impact Study 2020.
As the Malaysia market edition results showed, Covid-19, which led to wide movement restrictions, had driven momentum in Southeast Asia towards the digital economy by necessitating rapid adoption of e-commerce, digital payments and preference for online activities.
The report indicated that even as countries in the region start to ease the restrictions and prepare for a ‘new normal’, some of the trends and habits formed in response to the pandemic would likely remain.
The inputs were gathered from 10,000 consumers and/or business professionals across 10 markets in the Asia Pacific region.
Nearly half of the consumers surveyed in Malaysia reported an increase in online shopping during the period. Other online activities also saw heightened interest, such as surfing the Internet for news and entertainment (75%), online video streaming (57%), social networking (55%) and home delivery of food or groceries (50%).
Additionally, about 64% of Malaysians said they will conduct online shopping in the same frequency as currently or before the pandemic, even after restrictions are lifted.
Similarly, consumers expect to continue home deliveries (54%) and working from home (45%).
Malaysian consumers also shifted to other payment methods other than mobile/digital wallet, such as contactless debit cards (26%) and contactless credit cards (22%), while cash usage declined 64% since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Singapore, the Philippines and Thailand also reduced their cash usage by 67%, 64% and 59% respectively, with a similar uptick seen in use among all contactless payment methods.
Malaysia’s digital activities especially online shopping and usage of digital payments, were also higher in comparison to other markets in Southeast Asia.
In April, consumers in Malaysia were doing 18% more cashless payments including mobile and QR payments, as compared to 16% in the Philippines, 15% in Singapore, and 15% in Thailand.
On the contactless cards (both debit and credit), Malaysia tied with Singapore with approximately 24% of consumers in both markets saying they were using contactless payments more.
Meanwhile, Southeast Asia Emerging Markets, Mastercard division president Safdar Khan said the company was committed to using the power of data to enable businesses of all sizes to adapt and evolve alongside consumers’ changing needs, preferences and behaviours through e-commerce tools, increasing contact less payment limits, and spearheading the shift to contactless across the region.
"By putting consumer sentiment and concerns at the core of all decisions, businesses and governments will be able to move with greater confidence from this current situation, and mitigate the adverse impact of future crises,” he said.

Earlier today, the Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ) said it was alarmed over the Communications and Multimedia Ministry’s plan to review Al Jazeera’s accreditation and checks for a production licence over the documentary, describing this as the latest form of state retaliation against the Qatar-based broadcaster.

Among other things, CIJ had urged the government to drop all investigations into Al Jazeera, while also urging Saifuddin to support media independence and press freedom.

The CIJ said the government should provide a data-based rebuttal of the Al Jazeera documentary instead of merely branding it as allegedly misleading or inaccurate, pointing out that the government had instead initiated police investigations and questioned Al Jazeera staff over the documentary.

The CIJ reiterated its call for an internal investigation by the government over the potential issues in the treatment of undocumented migrants during the movement control order, also urging Saifuddin to proceed with the formation of the Malaysian Media Council “as a transparent and independent self-regulatory body for the industry and to avoid the government and its agencies from becoming the sole arbiter of truth”.

“Finas will give its full cooperation to the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) in carrying out investigations against Al Jazeera (M) Sdn Bhd under Section 22(1) of the Perbadanan Kemajuan Filem Nasional Malaysia Act 1981 (Amendment 2013) for carrying out filming activities, that is the activity of producing a documentary film without a valid licence from Finas,” it concluded.

Malay Mail’s check of the Act shows Section 22(1) as stating that no person shall engage in any activities of production, distribution or exhibition of films or any combination of these activities unless there is a licence authorising the person to carry out such activities.

Under Section 25 of the same Act, it is stated that any person who contravenes any provisions of the part of the law — which includes Section 22(1) — is guilty of an offence.

The same Section 25 provides for a punishment of a maximum fine of RM50,000 or a maximum jail term of two years or both if a person is convicted of an offence under the Act, with a maximum daily fine of RM10,000 if the offence is a continuing offence.

Among other things, Finas’ functions under the Act include the development of the film industry, and the regulation and control of the production, distribution and exhibition of films in Malaysia and to issue licences for such purposes.

Yesterday, Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah reportedly said his ministry will check if Al Jazeera had obtained a licence from Finas to produce the documentary before it started production, saying that a lack of licence would be considered an offence as permission from Finas is needed before films and documentaries can be produced in Malaysia.

National news agency Bernama had yesterday also reported Saifuddin as saying that his ministry will via the Information Department check if Al Jazeera had violated media accreditation conditions.

Saifuddin was reported saying that the Information Department will cancel Al Jazeera’s media accreditation if it was found to have violated such conditions, noting that the crew would not be free to go anywhere without the media cards issued by the department.

News outlet Al Jazeera did not have the necessary licence to film or air its documentary on the alleged mistreatment of migrants in Malaysia, the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) said today.

In a brief statement today, Finas said it had carried out an investigation on Al Jazeera International (M) Sdn Bhd regarding the production of the documentary titled Locked Up In Malaysia’s Lockdown, which Finas said was aired over social media.

“From the findings of preliminary investigations, Finas found that that company does not have a Film Production Licence and that there was no application for a Certificate for Filming for the filming of that documentary,” Finas said in the statement posted on its official Facebook page.

Al Jazeera filmed controversial documentary without license, Finas confirms

PETALING JAYA: The National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) has confirmed that Al Jazeera had filmed the Locked Up in Malaysia’s Lockdown documentary without a licence.

In a statement issued today, Finas’ corporate communications unit also noted that the international news agency lacked any certificate to give them filming rights in the country.

It said this was based on initial investigations, after the documentary courted controversy for its report accusing the government of discriminatory treatment of illegal immigrants during the movement control order (MCO).

As long as DBP is around teaching any subject in English will be a failure because the Malays just refuse to learn a second language. On top of that DBP an others gloat that Bahasa Melayu is the best langusge in the WORLD and one should NOT LEARN other languages. Thus they, the politicians can keep the Malays suppressed all the time. Why then does the PM jet up and down to Singapore for his medical treatmen when all students there opt to study in English. All those Doctors in Singapore, having studied in English, are better qualified than our DUMBOS who cant even do an appendectomy.

Yes ElvaLove, and Majority of restaurants and bars are not implementing face mask usage or maintaining social distancing. Many outlets don't even take down your particulars or conduct temperature checks anymore.
Why hasn't the Government made it mandatory for all food outlet workers and other customer facing industries to wear face masks at all times? Majority have stopped wearing and when questioned they say its not part of the SOP.
Social distancing is also no longer being practised. Almost everyone seated at restaurants and bars do not observe the SOP.
This is very worrying because it seems the Government has also become sloppy and overconfident. There is insufficient enforcement. Go to the ground and see what's happening. It's as if there is no Covid-19 threat. Everyone is so relaxed.

Its all happening the way the old fox has set the cards. These are preplanned moves right from the day he took office as the 7th PM of our beloved nation. Though the pandemic was not part of the planned, the pandemic has made his every move more possible to make UMNO return in December 2020, minus Najib and his many thieves. We may not have BN and PAS in the picture, but it will be UMNO, 'cleaner' and stronger and more determine to rule over us again..

This is the problem when Malaysians still want to make Mahathir relevant.

He will tell you one day that the Chinese are rich because they work hard and Malays must emulate them. The next day, he will tell you that the wealth of the Chinese is an unhealthy trend.

Then he will also tell you he has always kept his promises. Why not ask Mahathir to show us photos of the houses and cars his children have?

But the sad fact of the matter is that as far as the political narrative is concerned, I believed most Malays have bought into the umnoputras narrative that it is the Chinese rakyat that is the reason for their lack of wealth.
The Chinese rakyat knows they cannot depend on the govt., they toil and work hard to make a living.

But it is not like that evil old man's depiction that all the Chinese rakyat are wealthy - they are many struggling to make ends meet.
