The Hang Seng Index, on the other hand, has underperformed. It’s fallen 12% this year, with half of its members down at least 20%.
Morgan Stanley sees the new technology gauge providing a bigger sentiment boost near-term to the MSCI China Index than the Hang Seng, which has few components that will also be in the tech index. “The direct stock-level positives cannot translate into a meaningful index-level boost,” analysts led by Laura Wang wrote.

The compiler of the Hang Seng Index has already embraced change through moves such as scrapping a weighting limit for dual-class shares on some of its gauges. The tech index is seen helping investors bridge a gap between a Hong Kong benchmark overstuffed with old economy banks and insurers, and the technology companies that have emerged as big winners in the city’s beaten-down market.
“There are too many laggards in the Hang Seng Index,” said Castor Pang, head of research at Core Pacific-Yamaichi International Hong Kong. “With overseas-listed Chinese firms deciding to list closer-to-home, the Hong Kong market falls short in terms of having a representative index for these stocks. This new index serves to fill this gap and drive capital flows.”
Citi analysts led by Pierre Lau wrote in a recent note that the index will attract investors to other Hong Kong tech stocks, facilitate the issuance of index-linked funds and derivatives as well as boost turnover at Hong Kong Exchanges & Clearing Ltd. That stock is up 42% this year, most in the Hang Seng Index.
Supported by strong mainland inflows through stock connect links, Chinese technology shares have emerged as big winners in Hong Kong this year. Tencent has surged 41% while Meituan is up 87%.

Hang Seng Debuts New Index of Benchmark-Beating Tech Stocks
A new index focused on China’s technology giants is set to give investors greater access to their growing dominance in Hong Kong’s market.
The Hang Seng Tech Index, which launched Monday with backdated prices, tracks the 30 largest tech companies listed in the city, including Tencent Holdings Ltd., Alibaba Group Holding Ltd., Meituan Dianping and Xiaomi Corp. Tracking the gauge this year would have returned 47% for investors, versus a loss of 12% for the Hang Seng Index. The tech measure rose 0.8% Monday.
“All the conditions are now ready for large China tech stocks whether in China or already listed elsewhere,” Vincent Kwan, chief executive officer of index compiler Hang Seng Indexes Co., said on Bloomberg Television Monday.
The move comes at a time when further listings of Chinese technology firms are in the pipeline, such as Jack Ma’s Ant Group, following those of NetEase Inc. and JD.com Inc. Listing closer to home has become more attractive as tensions between Washington and Beijing threaten to curtail Chinese companies’ access to U.S. capital markets.

Wah. Sounds like bureaucracy gone mad. And basically it is impossible for an individual to get a licence to make a video let alone posting it online. The next time I see some one “capturing the moment” with their phone I better ask to see their licence. Complete lunacy!

Last week, the High Court hearing Najib’s money-laundering and power abuse trial over 1MDB funds skipped lunch in order to hear the case and end proceedings earlier.
Justice Sequerah decided to sit through the customary lunch break, having read a letter received from Azhar.
At around 1.06pm, the judge said that he had managed to view and digest the letter from the Speaker which he was not able to do earlier as he had been hearing the 1MDB trial since morning with only short breaks.
“What I’ve decided to do, if your client’s supposed to be there at 3.30pm, I have decided to go on, continue without lunch break. I’ll stop at 3.15pm. Your client can proceed to Parliament, it’s just around the corner,” he said.
“I must put on record, there’s something on calendar in Parliament. I don’t know what...it wasn’t informed earlier. I don’t want to waste time, I’ll proceed. Unless I’m informed well in advance on the next occasion, I will not be entertaining any more requests for similar adjournment,” he added.

However, Chang pressed the newly minted Speaker and told him that the debate speech could have been postponed to a later date when it did not clash with Najib’s trial.
Pasir Salak MP Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman then interjected, claiming that Chang was raising a petty matter in Parliament.
Chang then demanded if Azhar was setting a new precedent where anyone on trial will be able to obtain leave and attend Parliament sittings in the future.
An irate Azhar told the Lower House that there were already precedents set on this matter, implying that it was related to certain Opposition leaders.
“I requested his honourable judge’s consideration, I did not give him any instructions,” said Azhar.

“His honourable Pekan requested to debate the royal address at 3.40pm. That morning, he requested for adjournment for his trial so he can go to Parliament but it was denied. We have a doctrine of separation of powers.
“Unlike the Parliament in UK, where it is supreme, the powers of the judiciary, executive and legislative here are the same. I made a request to the judge and he gave his consent to allow Pekan to attend Parliament. I did not instruct him,” said Azhar.

Speaker says merely requested judge to let Najib skip court to attend Parliament
KUALA LUMPUR, July 20 — Datuk Azhar Azizan @ Harun has denied instructing High Court Judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah to grant adjournment for Umno MP Datuk Seri Najib Razak so he can deliver his debate during his 1MDB trial on July 16, last week.
The Dewan Rakyat Speaker told the Lower House this morning when he was queried by Pakatan Harapan (PH) lawmaker and Tanjong Malim MP Chang Lih Kang, that he had made a request for the adjournment.

Boomers cannot handle social media, they don’t know what is insta story and TikTok. Social media to them means spreading fake news in Facebook and WhatsApp.
When they can’t take it anymore, they find ways to stop other people having fun in social media.
That’s boomers, which is why we need to retire all boomers next GE. We need policy makers who understand 21st century, who knows how to engage people; not boomers who recycled the same narrative and don’t have energy for any tangible reform.

This issue is always brought up at crucial times. It will never change simply because the powers that control are not interested in upgrading the level of education in this country. Only those elite malays get to learn the queens english, but not the others. The reason is obvious.
To be honest this situation will never change because there is no will or want to change. It is more of will to do not want to change and progress. One person stands out for this predicament and it is non other then TDM. He was Education minister and PM, who studied in English, but denied others from it. Reason to have a vision 2020 with the malays as supreme, but sadly that back fired and today we are in 2020 scratching our b...., still wondering what went wrong. How stupid can we be?
Now Muhyiddin will be playing the same ball game, because he has no clue about what is going on. Similarly we too have no clue.
One question, why are the Singapore malays and South African Malays so much better off? At the same time there are Malaysians who have managed very well too.

'Spot the pink tag' eyes another alleged quarantine flouter
KUALA LUMPUR: A certain "pink bracelet" is making many see red.
With the battle against Covid-19 far from over, those returning from overseas and told to undergo home quarantine are under the spotlight as some of them have been spotted outside.
The Health Ministry adopted the use of a "pink hospital tag" to be worn by those under home quarantine for 14 days.
This generally means that those still sporting the tag should not be out in public.
In the most recent "spot the pink tag game", a photograph of one man with one such tag on his wrist sitting at an eatery allegedly in Desa Sri Hartamas, here, has gone viral on social media.
A source told Harian Metro that as of yesterday, the police has yet to receive a report on the matter.
"The police will check on the photo that is being shared on social media.
"The public is advised to immediately channel such information to the police," the source remarked when contacted yesterday.

Azhar once commented that the speaker must be someone of integrity, fiercely independent and well-versed in parliamentary affairs.
1. Integrity and fiercely independent?
The writing on the wall is that he had been specially chosen by the backdoor government. Now since he did not follow the rule daring not to take a vote on confirmation of his own position, he is thus a 'backdoor' speaker.
2. Well-versed in parliamentary affairs?
That would be the biggest problem as he was never a parliamentarian, learning from work experience, nor having a strong background as a judge - only a mere lawyer who appears in his own Youtube channel.

During his watch no intrusion in Malaysian waters ? He is saying he is doing his job well. Infact, it was during his watch and his cousin, the PM that China was more brazen in intruding Malaysia Economic Zone. They were lapping to China for funds to keep the lid on 1MDB closed.

How many non-Malays will say RM2 million is pocket money for them? How many non-Malays have hundreds of Birkin and Coach handbags stashed in the cabinets of their homes?
Malay leaders conveniently use the rich non-Malays to make blanket statements and pull the wool over the eyes of the Malays for personal interests.
The non-Malays are always their punching bag whenever they want to look good. We can only pity the Malay masses.

and UMNO & PAS have effectively solved their Urban and Kampung poor Malay issue. It's called "Blame Hardworking Chinese/DAP" Policy. Basically PAS & UMNO provides lip service to the poor Malay community by saying that the Chinese are doing well because they are robbing the nation dry and UMNO & PAS are going to defend their rights and take back the nation's riches from the Chinese and distribute it to the Malay community. Hence the Malays are required to vote PAS & UMNO back to power to ensure "maruah Melayu Dipertahankan". I guess their policy is working well since the 80's as the Malays keep voting PAS & UMNO. Only the educated Malays seem to have seen through this UMNO/PAS policy but majority of Malays still believe in this "blame the Chinese policy" although UMNO & PAS have been selling them this policy for about 30 years.

It has been long overdue that the Malays in this country need to wake up and voice out to make the changes that's needed.
(Why is it only the majority of the Non-Malays with the smaller percentage of population always opening the mouth for Fairness and Justice?)
They have to start realising that they were truly robbed of their Education and Socioeconomic well-being for the past 60 years by their own Ethnic Leaders.
These 'So Called Leaders' have only enriched themselves, their Family members and Cronies.
These Leaders have found a way to be in Power by not providing the Education and no-how-to-think mindset for the Malays so that they can keep robbing the Coffers as and when they wish because the Malay Rakyat will not ask them anything as long keep giving peanuts.
