“Disney wanted no association with a gaming company like GENM due to Disney’s ‘family-friendly’ brand strategy,” Genting said. I think Disney has got a more powerful motivation, and it extends beyond their famous anti-gambling stance.
I think with Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox, they probably feel that they can milk more value from setting up multiple 20th Century fox theme parks on their own (Disney is experienced with theme parks, with the success of numerous Disneylands. In 2015, Disney had US$13.611B in revenue from their US domestic theme parks. Each theme park had an average revenue of $2.27B)
Currently, they cannot do that due to the exclusivity granted to Genting via their existing agreement with 21st Century Fox (the Genting theme park was to be the only 20th Century theme park in the WORLD). So the only way is to kick Genting out and retract that exclusivity. Genting is suing to claim USD$1B in damages, which is peanuts to Disney, considering the amount that they can potentially make from the set-up of multiple 21st Century Fox theme parks. Genting can get the entireity of the $1B and still emerge as a loser.
