KUALA LUMPUR (March 5): Shares in Hengyuan Refining Co Bhd fell as much as 11.8% today, as oil prices rose ahead of a meeting among industry players which may lead to the taming of a global oil glut.

The stock was trading at RM10.74 in early afternoon — down RM1.44 or 11.8% — after a total of 5.43 million shares crossed, bringing the group a market capitalisation of RM3.31 billion.

The last time the counter closed near this level was in November 2017.

Hengyuan's shares have risen sharply in the past year, appreciating more than eight-fold since RM2.02 on Jan 3, 2017. However, it seems to have lost its steam this year, as it has shed about 40% year-to-date.

Oil ministers from the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and other global oil players are set to gather in Houston as CERAWeek — the largest energy industry conference — begins on Monday.

Reuters reported oil prices rose ahead of the meeting, as it raised expectations oil producers would discuss further on clearing the global oil glut.

Disregarding considerations of supply and demand, higher oil prices generally translate into higher cost of refining for pure refiner players such as Hengyuan.

The benchmark Brent crude oil was trading at US$64.57 per barrel this afternoon. From its low of US$44.82 in the past one year to date, the oil price has recovered some 44%.

The Edge Financial Daily today reported any big swing in crude oil prices may impact Hengyuan’s margins. It recently turned in its highest gross profit margin in two decades, at 12.37% for its financial year ended Dec 31, 2017.

Also, its new refining facilities might not be able to start in time to supply Euro4M petrol for RON95 grade, as the government’s deadline to implement the Euro4M specification for the grade is set on Oct 1.

Hengyuan had initially expected its US$135 million (RM526.5 million) project to come on stream by the second half of this year, but has said in its latest quarterly results announcement that it is taking longer-than-expected to fabricate the main equipment.

Any delay in the new facilities is expected to lead to loss of revenue, and in turn weigh on Hengyuan’s profitability.

TAIPEI, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- An oil refinery exploded in Taiwan' s Taoyuan city at about 6:40 a.m. Monday, local media reported.

More than 30 fire vehicles have been sent to the scene, and the fire has been brought under control. No casualties have been reported yet.

Hengyuan: Secures RM1.7bn credit line. Hengyuan Refining Co has secured USD430m (RM1.7bn) financing facilities from three banks to partly refinance its existing term loan and its planned capital expenditure (capex). Hengyuan said bilateral agreements were signed with Ambank (M), Labuan Offshore Branch, China Construction Bank (Malaysia) (CCB) and Maybank International Labuan Branch. The facilities consist of a term loan and a revolving credit line. The term loan will be used to refinance the company's existing term loan and planned capex, while the revolving credit facility is for working capital. (The Edge)
