It's being reported today that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC) is aggressively recruiting over 600 engineers and executives for what will be its first U.S. plant in 20 years, Nikkei Asia has learned.

The world's largest contract chipmaker will initially bring together a mix of current employees and new hires to staff a $12 billion chipmaking plant it will start building next year in Arizona, TSMC Chairman Mark Liu told Nikkei. The hiring push comes with American officials and lawmakers calling on semiconductor companies to bring more of their operations to the U.S.

According to Liu, a task force of more than 300 current employees and managers with experience in developing and producing 5-nanometer chips will be dispatched to help get the plant off the ground. Five-nanometer chips are the most advanced in the world and are used in the latest iPhone 12 range and Mac processors. The U.S. has agreed to offer as many working visas as TSMC needs for this purpose

TSMC will disclose its capex plan for 2021 at its upcoming investors meeting. The pure-play foundry is expected to budget more than US$20 billion in capex this year, according to a report by Taiwan's Central News Agency (CNA).

TSMC's 2021 capex will beat the record-high target of US$17 billion set last year, the report quoted market watchers as saying. The foundry will utilize its capex this year for the expansion of its 5nm process capacity, installation of more-advanced 3nm process capacity, and 2nm process R&D.

TSMC will hold its quarterly investors meeting on January 14.

(Bloomberg) -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. expects to boost capital spending to as much as $28 billion this year in order to safeguard its lead in advanced technologies that made it chipmaker of choice to the world’s technology and auto giants.

Capital spending for 2021 is targeted at $25 billion to $28 billion, compared with $17.2 billion the previous year, Chief Financial Officer Wendell Huang said on a conference call. The increase in capex is intended to meet surging demand for the chipmaker’s advanced technologies, he added. Revenue for the first quarter is expected to at between $12.7 billion to $13 billion, ahead of the the average analyst estimate of $12.4 billion.

Below are the positive of the company:

• Valuation is cheap. Despite being the largest port operator in Malaysia, its valuation is still only less than half of its next biggest competitor, Westport.

• Dividend yield is high at between 5.4% to 6.6%. Given the low interest rate environment, this would appeal to a lot of dividend seeking investors.

• Cargo handled in 4Q20 is already passed precovid level. It is even higher that the pre trade war level which started in FY18. The largest port in the group is Pelabuhan Tanjong Pelepas where the 2M shipping alliance has decided to make it their Asean HQ Port. 2M consist of the 2 largest shipping companies in the world: Maersk and MSC.

• Bonus event. Potential monetisation of Port business via IPO. The group is looking to raised RM4bil via IPO. Assuming the amount is from the sales of up to 40% interest in the port business, this values the port business at RM10bil which is way above the current market cap of only RM2.5bil. This does not include their 38% holding in Malakoff (valued at RM1.8bil), 31% of Gas Malaysia (valued at RM1bil) and their Engineering business which is currently the main contractor for MRT2 (via JV with Gamuda).
