I thought so. Lower price, higher dividend yield for long term gain. Although it is a free market, it is distorting the market mechanism. It would be more beneficial to have reasonable capital gain with reasonable dividend over the long haul by improving company's performance. Instead of just defending price to maintain dividend yield.

For a mature financial institution like Maybank, it is easy domestically but difficult regionally or internationally when coming to market expansion.

The investment bank said current account surplus in third quarter (Q3) 2022 jumped to RM14.1 billion (3.1 per cent of GDP) compared with RM4.4 billion (1.0 of GDP) in the previous quarter mainly on larger surplus in the goods trade account at RM43.0 billion.

Meanwhile, services trade deficit narrowed to RM9.6 billion in Q3 against RM12.3 billion in Q2, with a smaller deficit in transportation services, and a surplus in travel services amid the reopening of international borders.

Malayan Banking Bhd (Maybank), which saw its net profit jump 28.5% to RM2.16bil in the third quarter ended Sept 30 is focused on driving loans growth in key business segments across the bank’s home markets within a rising rate environment.

“The group will continue to drive fee-based income opportunities in growth areas such as wealth management, global markets, investment banking, asset management, and insurance,” the bank said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia.

CGS-CIMB reiterated its "add" call on Maybank, with an unchanged target price (TP) of RM10.30. This is premised on potential rerating catalysts from its expectations of strong loan growth in Indonesia of more than 10% in 2022, continuous expansion in the net interest margin amid the overnight policy rate upcycle, and recovery in non-interest income.

Meanwhile, Public Investment Bank Bhd (PIVB) said there was no repeat of 2QFY2022’s pre-emptive loan loss provisions when Maybank reported its 3Q results, an encouraging development considering the expectedly weaker macro environment going forward.

"Near-term challenges notwithstanding, we continue to like the group’s prospects, underpinned by its M25+ initiatives, and retain our ‘outperform’ call with an unchanged TP of RM9.70," it said in a note.

Dividend is the true cash we received from investing in equity market. Some companies make good profit but pay lower or no dividend over the years. As an investor, we could only hope for capital gain of which we really gain after disposal. Or else, it is just purrely paper gain.
